PACRAO Gives Back 2022
The Diversity Development Committee (DDC) is proud to introduce
Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) as this year‘s charitable organization for the 2022 PACRAO conference in San Diego.
About BLCI
BLCI’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college through after school programs that begin in the third grade. Their programs focus on the ABC’s of college success, with “A” being Academics, “B” being Behaviors and “C” being College and Career Knowledge. Students attend at least one workshop per week as well as mandatory tutoring after school.
BLCI strives to create a college-going culture, and works with whole families to accomplish this. Through our parent program, parents of BLCI students are required to complete at least 30 “volunteer” hours, which can be accomplished by attending parent meetings, participating in workshops on topics such as financial literacy, cyber security, mental health and more, donating snacks to their students’ cohort, and assisting at events.
Each year, 100% of seniors enrolled in BLCI programs graduate from high school and enroll in college (nationwide, only 59% of first-generation college students enroll in college or universities.) Additionally, BLCI Alumni have 86% college retention, compared to 65% of first-generation students nationally.
