Cohort Expectations

  • Connect for each of our 90-minute virtual monthly meetings.
  • Connect monthly with your LDI faculty mentor, both in group mentor meetings and individual meetings.
  • Read and prepare for monthly full-cohort meetings and monthly mentor group meetings.  Cohort members from this year report that they dedicate approximately 10 hours per month to their LDI reading and preparation.
  • Participate with the PACRAO conference for 2022 and for 2023. The incoming and outgoing LDI cohort members and faculty will meet together during each conference.
    • If your institution is not able to support your conference registration fee, scholarships may be available for LDI cohort members to cover that cost. Room accommodations may also be available, if shared with another LDI cohort member.
  • Volunteer for a PACRAO leadership position or other formal involvement activity with PACRAO within a year of completing the LDI.

Mentor/Mentee Expectations

Although in a mentor and mentee relationship there are defined roles and expectations it is important that both mentor and mentee are involved and invested in the development of each other as a partnership. This document helps to outline some best practices for mentor/mentee relationships to help guide LDI participants and faculty members in getting the most out of their relationship.

Generally to get the most out of a mentoring relationship a mentee should:
  • Take initiative to drive the relationship and be responsible for voicing your development needs and questions.
  • Provide feedback about the mentoring relationship and be open to receiving feedback. When providing feedback, be honest, and clear about your needs and opportunities.
  • Ask for suggestions and advice early in the relationship. When advice is given, listen to the mentor, try to apply at least some of their ideas, and/or let them know the results.
Conversely, a mentor should look to assist the mentee by:
  • Providing help, offering suggestions, and being a sounding board for issues relating to the mentee’s goals and development.
  • Being open to feedback from the mentee. When providing feedback, be honest, open and direct.  Mentors have the opportunity to develop in a mentor/mentee relationship as well.
  • Providing suggestions, thoughts, ideas, and advice on goals, activities, and progress to drive the mentee forward in reaching their stated goals.
Some expectations that should be agreed upon between the mentor and mentee to develop a good relationship are:
  • Always maintain confidentiality between one another.
  • Keep any commitments that are made.
  • Evaluate the relationship at various points within an agreed-upon time frame.
  • Meet regularly with your mentee.
  • Mutually determine a regularly scheduled meeting time and make other arrangements if plans need to change.
  • Accept and value one another’s differences.
  • When you meet, give each other your full and undivided attention (turn the cell phone to silent or mention your reasoning for leaving it on if necessary).
  • Be responsible for your own learning and actions.
  • Plan to be open to trying new things.
  • Build trust with one another by being open and honest.

Please discuss these expectations and responsibilities in the beginning of your mentor/mentee relationship and agree upon these items (and add any others you both feel pertinent) prior to beginning your formal mentoring sessions to help maximize and create value for your time together.
